We all want to be "good" and some of us, especiall

We all want to be "good" and some of us, especially women, have been trained to be good. Thinking about this in the context of self means shedding the persistent need to be nice and likeable so that we can reach our full potential. AND if we want to think more inclusively and about the collective, we can also recognize that the need to be good gets in the way of social justice work. ⁣

Being good doesn't leave room for making mistakes.
Being good doesn't leave room for learning and growth.

Being good means we aren't as honest with ourselves as we can be by seeing the role that we ALL play in systems of oppression so that we can address them. It absolves us of responsibility and makes it someone's else problem.

Growing up in America means we've all learned to internalize messages of White supremacy. It doesn't make us bad. It just makes us human and the more we get over the need to be good, the more impact we can make for a more just world.

The final #mynamestory participant is Yaminee, or as some of you in the emerging artist world know as Yam. Along with Rya, Yaminee is a 2nd generation immigrant, born here to immigrant parents. ⁣

Her story, like those of many AANHPIs, ricochets between the near constant tension of her Indian cultural heritage and American-ness, which is exemplified in the way she uses her name.

Currently open funding opportunities are available

Currently open funding opportunities are available on the Community page of my website (link in bio or webelongseattle.com). ⁣

Economic inequality has widened in this country and grants and awards are a way to redistribute that income. This is why I believe we should do what we can to apply for as many grants as possible, especially as emerging artists.

I am actively learning about artist grants that are relatively low barrier to entry and trust-based (i.e., unrestricted). I would, at some point, like to support other artists write grants but I want to get a feel for the landscape first. I have a background in academia and have written grants for NSF and US Dept. of Education and want to share my experience but before I do that, I want to get a few more artist grant writing experiences under my belt.

If you know of any accessible artist grants with unrestricted funding, let me know so I can add it to the community calendar!

Annya is the eighth participant in My Name Story.

Annya is the eighth participant in My Name Story. I won't show you her entire portrait until she's had a chance to see it but I wanted to share a little bit about her. ⁣
Annya is originally from Java, Indonesia and immigrated here when she was 10. She started life in America in a small, White town on the east coast as the only brown face and felt very different not just outside her family, but inside too because her mother had remarried to a White man.

You may be wondering why all the women in the project are holding portraits. They were asked to select a portrait that spoke to them and represents a time or place in their life that they felt they needed to revisit. They also wrote letters to this version of themselves to let them hear what they needed to hear, to be the voice of guidance and love that they never got.

If your personal growth and healing journey is only about learning to protect your own inner peace, then consider going further. ⁣

Self-care has been co-opted to mean caring for oneself in superficial ways so that you can benefit only yourself. But self-care was popularized by social justice movements led by people like the Black Panthers and bell hooks who had a vested interest in bettering society.

Taking care of ourselves is so important but replenishing our energy is also about making room for the work of service. It's about showing up for those who don't have the privilege or capacity to do so, not just for the betterment of self.

Why do you practice self-care? Is it only centered on self? How can you move towards a more community-centered approach?
